  • Overview

    The Physical Damage Appraiser prepares auto repair estimates, which accurately reflect the reasonable dollar cost of the damage sustained. This is to be accomplished in a prompt, courteous and fair manner. This activity should be carried out in a professional manner consistent with company policy and supervisory instruction.




    • Inspect and determine extent of auto damage. Prepare repair appraisal in accordance with company and industry procedures.
    • Review Estimate with repair facility and/or vehicle owner
    • Reinspect vehicles for supplemental repairs when applicable.
    • Make payments when authorized
    • Maintain drive-in claim facilities for inspection of damaged vehicles on an appointment basis.
    • Negotiate with repair shops when necessary. Locate used parts and negotiate with salvage dealers when applicable.
    • Keep estimating equipment and software up to date
    • Maintain current knowledge of auto repair techniques, labor rates, parts prices, and industry trends. Attend and participate in company - sponsored meetings, seminars and continuing education activities.
    • Serve as a catastrophe team member or assist in other claim offices or locations as required.
    • Regular, predictable attendance.

    • Advise appropriate claim representative of poor risks that should be referred to underwriting.
    • Promptly respond to complaints as requested.
    • Assist and give guidance to claim representative when requested.


    • Physical demands: Mobility; Normal vision (with or without correction); Speaking (with or without correction).
    • Mental demands: Prolonged concentration; High volume under time pressure.
    • Environmental factors: Working outdoors; Extreme cold, below 32 degrees for more than 1 hour; Standard office lighting, temperature, and noise.
    • Equipment: Keyboard; Calculator.
    • Travel may be required


    • Valid driver’s license
    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in preparing auto repair estimates either in a body shop or insurance company environment using Mitchell, CCC, Audaexplorer estimating software.
    • Ability to make mathematical computations.
    • Basic keyboarding skill required.
    • Exceptional negotiation and public relations skills.
    • ICAR Pro level one or Platinum status preferred
    • Demonstrates a positive and supportive attitude of company and departmental goals.
